this post is about fried foods
Last night we decided to make onion rings using sweet onions, since we have a whole lot of those here (and I had a 10-pound bag just sort of sitting in my house getting used very slowly). We used this recipe and were more or less successful, though the early ones lost most of their breading as we fried them since I didn’t learn how to coat them correctly until about halfway through the process.
Then Iris suggested we fry a candy bar. In Scotland they deep-fry Mars bars, so we got a Milky Way from across the street, breaded it as if it were an onion, and threw it in our fryer. We each took about a bite of it, since about a bite is as much as anyone could manage; Bryan told us he tried a deep-fried Mars bar and was able to take and swallow one bite and that was it. In my case, I spent most of the rest of the evening convinced I was in the midst of some horrifying drug experience, I kind of couldn’t walk, and I was pretty sure that my brain was, in fact, not getting oxygen for some reason. At one point I kept almost falling asleep and at another I had a twenty minute conversation about the terrors I now associate with fried food.
The worst part is that I kind of wanted more fried food a few hours later. I’m really glad we didn’t have any.
